Infrastructure is a key component of teaching and research excellence. To support that mission, Indiana University is in the midst of one of its largest construction efforts in decades—a nearly half-billion dollar effort to build and renovate new facilities on all eight IU campuses.

In 2008, with support from partner Clarian Health, IU added 10 buildings, totaling 1.2 million square feet of teaching, research, and living space, across the IU system. From student housing complexes at IU South Bend and IU Southeast to the IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis, these facilities have dramatically enhanced the productivity of IU teachers, researchers, and students.

In November 2009, IU celebrated the opening of the Indiana University Innovation Center, a business incubator dedicated to nurturing new Bloomington-based technology and life sciences companies—and new home to the Lilly Endowment- and NSA-funded Pervasive Technology Institute.

That same month also witnessed the dedication of the Indiana University Data Center in Bloomington, which includes three 10,000-square-foot machine rooms that protect valuable technological assets, including IU’s Big Red and Quarry supercomputers, and provide a safe and stable hub for future digital growth.

Other ongoing construction projects include:

  • Renovation of all student residence halls on the IU Bloomington campus, adding such features as air conditioning, semi-private bathrooms, and suite style conversions

  • Construction of new student housing at IU Bloomington

  • Construction of Indiana University Cinema, the first IU facility devoted to film

Innovation, Accelerated by Tradition.
